The arguments I've heard for keeping marijuana illegal tend to center around these two issues:
  • Continued use can lead to more serious drugs and activities (the gateway argument)

  • Use leads to a general lack of ambition and non-productive uses of time (the pothead stereotype)
I dismiss the first argument on grounds that most of the "gateway" issue is caused by rather than cause for illegality. The search for an illegal substance such as pot will introduce one to an underground community that traffics in other more serious vices. Any gateway tendencies beyond that could easily be attributed to alcohol, which is legal.

As for the second, in what way is pot worse than say reality television? I personally apply this argument in avoiding both...

It seems odd to comment when there are only 3 people who know about this blog. It also seems odd for you to tackle multi-faceted topics (such as the legalization of marijuana, politics, and economics), of which I know you're a fan, and be brief. I'm not sure that a few sentences can do justice to the broad range of issues and arguments.

Also, why did you enable an approval system for comments?

1) Brevity means that people might actually read.

2) Moderation is on because I was dealing with a griefer shortly after creating the blog. I'll probably turn it off again soon and see how I fare.

1. Agree with Pinto on the brevity thing, but add that elucidative hyperlinks might magnify the power. Or, er, something.

2. Well, there's always CAPTCHAs.... Hey, maybe we can go in halfsies on an account here.
